Abstract

Introduction: The first confirmed case with Sars-CoV-2 in Latin America was on February 26, 2020, in the metropolis of São Paulo, the most populous city in the southern hemisphere. Objective: To describe the repercussions of the transmission of the Sars-CoV-2 virus, as well as the characteristics of the numbers of cases and deaths confirmed by Coronavirus-2019 Disease in the state of São Paulo between February 26, 2020 to July 2, 2020. Method: Retrospective descriptive observational study, source of data on the numbers of cases, deaths, age group and risk factors were from epidemiological bulletins and COVID-19 Panel from the Ministry of Health, InfoGripe Panel from Fundação Oswaldo Cruz and epidemiological bulletins from the Health Secretariat of the Government of São Paulo. Results: Between the 1st to the 26th epidemiological week, the numbers of cases and deaths from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome were higher (p = 0.00) compared to the total number of cases and deaths from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in the same period of 2019. Men over 60 years of age, who have at least one risk fator, are more likely to develop Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome and evolve to death. Final considerations: The State of São Paulo is the current epicenter of Sars-CoV-2 in Brazil and the data points to an increase in cases and deaths in the interior of the state, requiring the maintenance of social isolation measures.
